  1. A pump is any device for moving liquids and 
  2. gases, or compressing gases. Some pumps, such 
  3. as the traditional lift pump used to raise 
  4. water from wells, work by a reciprocating 
  5. (up-and-down) action. Movement of a piston in 
  6. a cylinder with a one-way valve creates a 
  7. partial vacuum in the cylinder, thereby 
  8. sucking water into it.
